Financial Planning is a discipline which integrates all areas of personal finance, including planning for education, retirement, investment, taxes, insurance, and your estate. We work with individuals and families to help them define their financial goals and develop strategies for reaching those goals.

Busch Financial Planning operates much like a dentist’s or accountant’s practice. Clients call or visit when they have a need, and they pay for the time spent working on their specific financial strategy. There are no long-term contracts or retainer agreements. This hourly fee approach gives you the flexibility to schedule just a financial check-up and/or get a second opinion, if that is all you need. Furthermore, as a Fee-Only financial planner, our compensation comes only from our clients. We do not accept commissions from the sale of insurance, investments, or any other products. This truly independent structure allows us to give high level, professional advice without any conflicts of interest.

About

Gary Busch

Gary Busch, Founder and Principal of Busch Financial Planning

Busch Financial Planning is an independent financial advisory firm located in suburban Houston.

Gary had a highly successful career working in information technology for a major energy company for almost 30 years, most of it in management. During his years of managing multi-million dollar budgets in the corporate world, Gary learned the importance of understanding client needs and effectively allocating limited resources to help them meet their goals, much like personal financial planning. He sees his practice as an opportunity to make a more direct and visible impact on people’s lives.

Gary holds an MBA degree along with a BA/BS in mathematics. He earned the right to use the CFP® mark of distinction (and to call himself a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional) from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards.

Besides being a part of the Garrett Planning Network, he is also a member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA), the largest organization of professionals dedicated to championing the financial planning process. He is also a member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA), the nation’s premier organization of comprehensive Fee-Only advisors.

Gary and his wife Sheryl are active members of their church, where Sheryl is Children’s Pastor and Gary has led small group studies on Biblical financial principles. They have a daughter who recently completed a PhD in genetics

CFP® and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ are certification marks owned by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. These marks are awarded to individuals who successfully complete the CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements.

Gary Busch was quoted extensively in a CBS Money Watch article entitled, "401(k) Mistakes to Avoid".

He was also quoted in an Investment News article on the impact of the Deepwater Horizon incident on BP shareholders, specifically employees, and in this article on best moves to make with your 401(k) plan when you change jobs.

Busch Financial Planning is a proud member of the following societies and adheres to their standards of professional excellence and integrity:

Our Services

Busch Financial Planning is a financial planning and registered investment advisory firm headquartered in suburban Houston, Texas. We provide fee-only financial planning services and investment advice. Our financial planner avoids potential conflicts of interest by working solely for you. We receive no compensation from third parties such as mutual fund or insurance companies, and we do not sell any financial products.

We work with people of all ages from all walks of life. While we enjoy seeing most of our clients at least annually, you can engage us on either a one-time basis or as needed. Whether you are building assets for the future—or seeking to protect, enjoy, and pass on those you already have—Busch Financial Planning is ready to help with sound, professional advice.

Your questions at this point of your life may include:

  • Am I saving enough for retirement?
  • Are my investments properly allocated and diversified?
  • How should I be saving for my children's education?
  • Am I managing risk properly with insurance?
  • What estate planning documents (will, etc.) should I have?

To help you reach your goals, our services include:

  • Retirement planning strategies
  • Investment portfolio analysis
  • Lump-sum distribution advice
  • College funding advice
  • Estate planning advice
  • A second opinion on investments and current financial plans

Please Note: While we continue to serve existing clients, we currently have a minimum three month waiting list for new clients. We will update this page if the situation changes. Thank you for your understanding.

What makes us different from most advisors? The combination of the following:

Compensation Model

Most financial advisors earn their living partially or fully from commissions on the products they sell, such as front-end-load mutual funds and cash value life insurance. We are Fee-Only planners, which means that our only compensation comes from clients. This eliminates potential conflict of interest between what's best for the client and what makes more money for the planner, and allows us to give you truly independent, objective advice.

Client Wealth

Most financial advisors target only high net worth clients. For example, many planners have a minimum level of investable assets a prospective client must be willing to invest through them before they are accepted as a client. $250,000, $500,000 and $1,000,000 are common thresholds. Note that "investable assets" don't include 401(k) plans, since the planner can't directly manage them. Given that 401(k) plans are many workers' largest investment, you can see how few people meet the minimums. In contrast, Busch Financial Planning is structured to serve clients with middle incomes and above.

Client Temperament

Most financial advisors seek clients who are delegators, i.e., they want to delegate the management of their investments to the advisor. Many of our clients take an interest in their own finances, but want professional advice to ensure they're on the right track. For example, is my allocation between stocks and fixed income investments reasonable for my age? Do I have enough life insurance? Which are the best mutual funds in my 401(k)?

Services Offered

Most financial planners want to do a full financial plan for you, covering risk management (insurance), investments, retirement planning, tax planning and estate planning. While we believe a comprehensive planning approach is best, middle income clients usually either can't afford the full-blown plan, or don't believe it's worth the cost. Thus we offer services by the hour for their most pressing current needs (a la carte, in other words).

STEP 1: Initial Inquiry

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

When you contact us, we will provide a brief description of services, philosophies, methodology, and fee structure. We will direct you to our web site to help you learn more.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

If our services appear to fit your needs, call to schedule a Get Acquainted Meeting, which can be done either on the phone or in person.

STEP 2: Complimentary Get Acquainted Meeting

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Get Acquainted Meeting or Teleconference is an opportunity for us to exchange information about your needs and objectives, and further discuss which of our services are right for you. We will also provide an estimated fee quote.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

You will need to provide us with a completed Confidential Questionnaire before we schedule a meeting. At the end of the meeting, we will give you a list of additional data or information which we will need to begin formulating your financial plan. One-half of the estimated total fee (or $500 maximum) is due when you sign the agreement and engage our services.

STEP 3: Data Gathering & Initial Preparation

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

When we receive your information, we review your data and begin to develop your financial plan. We formulate additional questions to discuss at our Step 4 meeting.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

In Step 3, you gather the data requested, and complete your cash flow worksheet and risk tolerance questionnaire. You may upload, fax, or mail this information to us.

STEP 4: Interactive Goal Setting

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

In this meeting, usually done by email exchange, we discuss and clarify the information you have provided thus far. We continue to refine your financial goals and objectives.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

In this meeting, you have another opportunity to clarify your current situation, financial goals and objectives.

STEP 5: Analysis and Plan Formulation

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

We edit the initial information as needed and run additional scenarios if applicable. We conclude our research and analysis, and produce final reports for your personal financial plan. We add our observations and recommendations to the plan.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

We will normally schedule a presentation meeting or teleconference 10 to 14 days after our Step 4 meeting. We will be working on your plan in the interim.

STEP 6: Presentation of Your Financial Plan

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

In Step 6, we present and review your personal financial plan. We discuss all reports and provide you with a written summary of our observations and specific recommendations.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Congratulations! At this point, you will hold a personalized blueprint, custom designed to meet your financial goals. Full payment of the balance for actual fees incurred is due at the conclusion of your plan presentation meeting.

STEP 7: Financial Checkups

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

We are available for consultation regarding your implementation of the plan. Periodic update meetings and reviews, at least annually, are also recommended.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Proper implementation is crucial to reaching your financial goals. We urge prompt action. We also strongly recommend an annual checkup meeting to review and update your plan.

FAQ

1. Please tell me about the financial planning process.
2. How do you create this blueprint?

First we focus on your goals, objectives, priorities and values. For instance: the reduction of current and future income taxes may be an immediate goal, funding a quality education for your children and/or grandchildren may be an intermediate goal, and enjoying a secure financial future in your retirement years is likely to be one of your most important long-term goals. Another great goal in life for some people is creating wealth and/or leaving a legacy for your chosen beneficiaries or charities.

You may already be on the road to meeting these objectives and simply need a new strategy, professional insight, or to fine-tune your plan. You may just be starting out, or you may be somewhere in between. Whatever your unique situation may be, everyone needs a periodic assessment of where they are on the road to meeting their financial goals. That’s why we do an in-depth review of your current financial situation. Next, you need to know how you can set about achieving (or continue working toward) your financial goals. By focusing on cash flow, investments, taxes, pensions and retirement plans, estate planning, insurance issues, savings opportunities and other general financial matters, we design a customized financial plan for you. Finally, to achieve the intended results, you must implement and monitor your plan.

3. Sounds like a lot of work!

It may seem like that at first, but the good news is, if you follow your plan and maintain a disciplined approach, you can rest well knowing you can reach your stated goals. At Busch Financial Planning, we try to make the process as easy as possible for you.

4. Who can benefit most from your services?
5. What is ''Fee-Only'' financial planning and why should that be important to me?

Because we are Fee-Only financial planners, all conflicts of interest regarding compensation are removed. We do not accept sales commissions; we work solely for our clients. Because we do not sell financial products such as investments and insurance, there are no third-party relationships or outside influences to color our thinking and financial recommendations. For more information on Fee-Only financial planning, including our Code of Ethics, Fiduciary Code and member requirements, please visit www.NAPFA.org.

In addition, our firm is a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA); as such, we must comply with a host of regulations designed to protect the consumer. One important question you should always ask when considering a financial planner’s services is ''May I please have a copy of your ADV Part 2?'' This document contains important information about the planner’s qualifications, fiduciary duties, history of any past violations, etc. We would be happy to send you a copy of our ADV Part 2. Please contact us to request your copy.

6. I understand the benefits of working with a Fee-Only financial planner, but I might need to obtain financial products. How will I be able to do that?

While we do not sell financial products, we will offer specific recommendations and opinions regarding the purchase of the various financial products that may be appropriate for you. So, if you need to obtain an insurance policy or a new mortgage, invest into a portfolio of mutual funds, or find an estate planning attorney or tax professional, we can direct you to the resources you need and/or help you obtain these products and services.

7. Does Busch Financial Planning provide only comprehensive financial planning?

No. Although a comprehensive financial plan can provide the greatest benefits, we can limit our advisory services to your specific needs, such as investment analysis, retirement planning, estate planning, or college education funding.

8. My spouse and I are just beginning to build for our financial future. There is so much to learn! We need help and guidance to get started. Will you accept us as clients?

Yes. Some firms have income levels and/or net worth minimums, but at Busch Financial Planning, we realize that everyone has financial needs. Remember, ''You don't have to have a fortune to start building one.'' Contact us today and let's get started!

9. I have already accumulated substantial assets and think I am doing quite well. But as I progress and build for the future, things seem to be getting more complicated. I want to be sure I am on track, but I don’t always have the time or inclination to manage the myriad details by myself. Can you help me?

Yes. People who need more sophisticated financial planning or advice will find our services appealing and beneficial. If you are looking for a professional review or a second opinion to ensure you are on track, we can provide that.

10. If I use Busch Financial Planning to develop a financial plan, am I obligated to purchase the recommended products?

Absolutely not. We will offer recommendations which in our professional opinion will meet your needs and objectives, but you are under no obligation to implement them. In today’s competitive market, it makes sense to shop around for the best available product or service. For instance, if you need to obtain a life insurance or disability policy, we will suggest the kind of policy, which riders and what amounts may be best for you. We will then direct you to a choice of companies that can provide a quality product at competitive prices for you.

11. Tell me about your investment philosophy.

As financial planners and investment consultants, we believe in the following fundamental principles with regard to designing an investment portfolio and making specific recommendations: The purpose of a client’s investment portfolio is to fund current and/or future financial objectives. The design of the portfolio must take into account the client’s financial objectives, tolerance for risk, needs for current income or liquidity, and special considerations such as income and estate taxes.

The important thing to remember is that no one can predict the future. It is difference of opinion that makes a market. Investment and economic ''experts'' provided with the same information often come to different conclusions. We do not suggest that we, or that any of the money or mutual fund managers that we recommend, will make the correct decision every time. We do believe, however, that studying the historic trends and relationships of investment classes and the philosophies and approaches of successful investment managers can provide valuable insight.

The appropriate allocation of investment assets for your goals and risk tolerance is the most important component in developing an investment portfolio. We believe that having a diversified, well-balanced portfolio of indexed mutual funds and/or ETFs, following long-term buy-and-hold-and-rebalance strategies, and having patience will increase the likelihood that you will achieve your long-term financial objectives.

12. How do you select investments for a client?

Before we recommend any investment, we consider the current economic conditions, the outlook for that asset class or type of security and how this investment fits within your portfolio given your objectives and tolerance for risk. We focus primarily on low cost index funds. As fiduciaries for our clients, we strive to obtain the most appropriate investment vehicles to meet your objectives, while being very conscious of total expenses and risk exposure.

13. How do you price your financial planning services?

Before we recommend any investment, we consider the current economic conditions, the outlook for that asset class or type of security and how this investment fits within your portfolio given your objectives and tolerance for risk. We focus primarily on low cost index funds. As fiduciaries for our clients, we strive to obtain the most appropriate investment vehicles to meet your objectives, while being very conscious of total expenses and risk exposure.

13. How do you price your financial planning services?

The fees are based on the actual time involved in meeting with you in person or over the phone, researching and analyzing your current situation, and providing specific recommendations and implementation assistance (if appropriate). Hourly rates are applied to calculate the total cost of the engagement.

14. How much will my financial plan cost?

Financial planning fees are determined on a project basis; the total fee for a financial plan will vary from client to client based on the specific needs and complexity of your situation (please see "How We Work" to learn about our financial planning sequence and the client service options available). An estimate is provided after the Get Acquainted Meeting, when your personal needs are fully identified. Many limited engagements cost between $800 and $2,500. A more complete financial plan runs $2,500 and up, depending on the complexity of your finances.

15. Are your fees tax deductible?

Section 212 of the Internal Revenue Code permits an itemized deduction for tax and/or investment advice in the miscellaneous section of Schedule A. It is subject to a 2% floor of the adjusted gross income on a personal tax return.

16. Once my financial plan is completed, will our relationship end?

The actual engagement of services may end, but the majority of our clients choose to do a periodic review at least annually and we recommend that you do so.

17. How can I get started?

The first step is an initial inquiry from you. Email us or call us at (832) 529-4518. We offer an initial no-cost, no-obligation Get Acquainted Meeting, either on the phone or in our offices. For Get Acquainted Meetings, appointments are scheduled based on availability during regular business hours Monday through Friday.

Should you decide to engage our services, we can discuss which of our services are appropriate for you. Most clients find the financial planning process to be stimulating and enlightening. The end result, of course, is greater peace of mind. We look forward to helping YOU build a brighter financial future!
